apparently, i'm going to have nine choices. now, if i could only see them, especially, because mental health is now provided and after this process, i need some. happy thanksgiving, everybody! va happy thanksgiving to you. i'm richard lui here at msnbc. black friday shopping is starting to creep. we're live outside one store opening its doors right now. congress is off for the holiday and most of december. what it means for unemployment benefits set to run out. it's almost time to get the bird in the oven. the butterball turkey talk line joins us with some tips for you that could save your holiday meal. and we check in with our troops stationed overseas as well on this thursday morning. but first we start off this hour for you, thanksgiving travellers may be a bit weary after their first leg of traveling to their holiday destinations, dealing with over 600 flights cancelled yesterday while millions of

drivers battled heavy rain, winds and snow. yesterday's storms are now moving into canada. it should be a calm and dry day for those of you hitting the road or on the road already trying to get to some early shopping. the big question this morning will whipping winds ground those famous macy thanksgiving parade balloons? 16 giant balloons will be grounded if sustained winds top 23 miles per hour. or wind gusts hit 34 miles per hour. 15 million people as well will be watching this parade from home. bill karins joins us right now to tell us if those balloons will fly? >> great thanksgiving morning to you, richard. i've been tracking the winds in new york city. everyone wants those balloons to fly. the closest observation site is in central park which the parade route goes down the side of. that's what they are judging on. you can fly the balloons over 34 mile-per-hour winds.

these are the wind gusts since 7:00 p.m. last night. in thor 20s. close. highest was 30 at 1:00 a.m. so far so good. my guess is they will keep some of the problems maybe all of them but lower them. as far as the forecast goes that big huge storm has cause ad lot of people delays especially on the east coast. that's gone, heading up into nova scotia. snow off of the great lakes. very cold out there from florida back to the rockies. very chilly morning. we do have some streamers coming off the lakes. this is lake-effect snow bands. some near syracuse and buffalo but a big one across the michigan is. some may go through detroit. be careful driving there. wind chills. richard, a wind chill of 33 in orlando this morning. they are not happy there, going disney or any of the theme parks on thanksgiving day or trying to be outside in florida. you're not used to that. 66 this afternoon. lots of sunshine on the map. no problems for anyone's travels today. back to you. >> 33 degrees in orlando is like

the end of the world. bill karins will check back with us later. president obama said he'll spend his thanksgiving just like the rest of us with family, friends, lots of food and some football to boot. he released his weekly address this morning with a special thanksgiving message. take a listen. >> we're a people who are greater together than we are on our own and that's what today is about. that's what every day should be about. no matter our differences we're part of one american family. we're each other's keepers. we're one nation under god. >> now president obama also wants families to spice up dinner conversation today suggesting families should discuss the fooshl care act. parents, turkey isn't the only thing to talk about at thanksgiving this year. #gettalking. >> reporter: richard, good morning and happy thanksgiving. the obama family will spend this thanksgiving just as they do every year, right here at the white house, enjoying a

traditional thanksgiving meal. we should get the menu a little bit later on today. on wednesday the first family continued other holiday traditions, handing out meals at a local food bank and the president pardoned the national thanksgiving turkey. this year a bird named popcorn. for the president this holiday season comes against the backdrop of more problems with the website healthercare.gov. on wednesday the administration announced small businesses those with 50 employees or fewer won't be able to enroll in health care through healthercare.gov for another year. those businesses will still be able to sign up as they currently do, though, through an agent or a broker. the administration says the move is necessary so that technicians can focus on fixing the website for individuals. some in the small business community expressed disappointment and concern that the delay could add more confusion to an already complicated process. republicans not surprisingly pounced with house speaker john boehner saying the delay was an

indication the president bit off more than he can chew with this health care law. all this comes with another shake up of the website. the administration says hewlett-packard will replace verizon as the site's web provider, a move that's been in the work since spring. tech experts are working through this holiday weekend to make sure the website is running smoothly by saturday, that's the administration's self-imposed deadline and that means it can support as many as 50,000 users at one time. officials here say they are still on track to do that. richard, back to you. >> thank you so much. i would like to bring in andy sullivan a correspondent for reuters and jo ann keenan. jo ann you've been watching this story. we get the development of shock or small businesses and their ability to enroll their

employees for various health care insurance programs. that's now been delayed. how big of a setback is that? because we've seen several delays of shop throughout this latest cycle. >> right. they told us it would be -- they delayed it a couple of months ago. they said it would be ready in november. turns out it will be ready next november. that's another shock. another delay. the small business market was never as important as the individual market where ordinary people and families who are buying insurance on themselves, that's where this website is so problematic is causing trouble. right. shop is another delay. another sign they can't get it all on deadline. they missed the deadlines. not as big a deal in terms of how many people it covers. >> does it worry you when you look at the process that they have been going through trying to fix some of those very large problems they've had with the exchange, does this worry you? >> they sort of made shop a lower priority. months ago we knew it wasn't going as good. we knew not as many plans would

be in it. we knew the features to make it more attractive wouldn't happen in year one. did i expect it to happen? >> no. did i know it was back pedaling so they could focus on individuals, yes. >> i was looking through the hill this mornings some of the headlines, hp replaced verizon. spanish language set to miss deadline being pushed off according to the associated press. making these changes and saying what the verizon to hp move that that was in the works anyway. what's your reaction to these recent developments that we got just within the last 24 hours? >> well, i think they are trying to focus on the essential functions and make sure that the individual marketplace is at least working for most people by the end of the weekend. that's their goal to have it service 80% of those that try throwing on. keep in mind one in five people who try to logon and use the

website will not be able to if everything goes according to plan. what we've seen they are to discussion on the essential core elements of the individual marketplace, they are deprioritizing the spanish language effort and the effort for small businesses as well. i mean at this point they've just got to make it work in a very basic fashion to avoid it becoming more of a debacle than it is. >> what do you think about the timing of these announcements? >> the fact they announce it a day before a big holiday where fewer people are paying attention? >> perhaps. >> there's a long tradition of that in washington. they made an announcementerlier the day before july 4th. maybe they just came to that realization yesterday and decided it would be a good day to release the news to minimize the amount of attention it draws. here we are talking about it. >> we'll talk more about it on

when congress members are asked at the thanksgiving table how are things back at work this year for you they want to change the subject because first of all they are not that popular. 9% approval rating. they haven't gotten much done. they passed less than half as many bills at this point in president george bush's second term. don't expect a holiday gift earth from lawmakers. eight more days left on the calendar right now where votes will be scheduled. let's go to our gentlemen. governor, let's kick it off with you, we've been talking about the filibuster reform over the past week. we use that as one indicator. what's your thought here? are we headed for more dysfunction in the remaining

days of the year or more progress based on what you're seeing? >> unfortunately, dysfunction in the guise of doing absolutely nothing. they only have eight working days left where we don't have a jobs bill, or economic deal on the fiscal cliff or debt limit. we don't have an energy bill which could take advantage of the energy explosion that's happening in this country. we don't have anything. and congress seems paralyzed to act. i think citizens are absolutely irate when they hear there are only eight working days. with all those things on the agenda and to be lie jobs bill we ever get is the republicans passing or repeal obama care that will help create jobs it's ludicrous. >> governor, what do you think might bubble to the top of those that you just listed off in the remaining days we got? >> what should bubble to the top is jobs bill, with infrastructure, research, things like that. anything that will bulb told the

top maybe immigration reform, maybe. but i doubt it. i doubt it. so hopefully something, some sort of deal that will keep the government working in january and deal with the debt limit crisis. that's the key to figure out a deal that will continue to reduce the debt because our debt is exploding. don't believe -- the deficit is going down but our debt keeps going up and up. >> joe, let's talk about that. we have that december 28th deadline for unemployment benefits. we're in the holidays right now. what the governor is saying is it doesn't look good. is this a time for a recast? look at the mood again, maybe come back and have different energy in the remaining days? >> it would be nice if we could get that done. i worked in the u.s. senate before i worked in the white house. >> i still like you. >> thanks. thanks, richard. but, i'm not very optimistic. i think the governor is very accurate. i don't think there's a lot of hope that anything of substance is going to get done.

it's not necessarily always the number of legislative items that become law, the number of billings that become law but it's the quality and what bills become law. and i don't have any sense there's any appetite to tackle anything that's important and the governor listed a whole host of things that are important and didn't get to the 60 tax revisions that expire or important to lots of americans or medical -- the reimbursement -- we didn't talk about the budget, of course by the 15th of january they have to pass at least a stop gap measure to make sure the government is still running. so there are all these issues on the table. we'll get the stop gap passed but that's nothing to write home about. >> talk about the stop gap here, governor, it reminds me what business has been criticized of doing managing by quarter by quarter. is that how we should expect things. these small budget deals one after another? >> it's pitiful.

you know, all we do is kick the can down the road and i'm co-chair of the campaign to fix the debt and we have a group that works with us called the can kicks back. young people are sick and tired of not seeing progress, no real substance and it's time that the president sits down with congress and boehner and others and say let's do a deal on the budget, let's do something that will put the economy on the right course not just for the next year but for the next decade and next couple of decades. we can do that. >> i like that. >> we used to do big things in this country. we used to be able to tackle big problems. we don't have that ability any more and it's destroying the country. >> knock on wood we can turn that around. joe, quickly here. what is your turkey of the season legislatively? >> oh, my turkey? i guess legislatively be the affordable care act. there was an opportunity for that roll out, i think it would

the war in afghanistan has been raging for 12 years now and though troops are due to draw

down in 2014 they are not there yet. joining me now from afghanistan is nbc's chief foreign correspondent richard engel. good thanksgiving to you. as you're out there, what are the troops doing and how are they celebrating thanksgiving? >> reporter: >> richard, if you can hear me how are the troops and how are they celebrating thanksgiving? >> reporter: i can barely hear you. you can hear through this microphone a helicopter is just coming in right now so please bear with me. today is, obviously, a special day for troops. they miss their families. but on this base which is one of the last remaining outposts for troops in eastern afghanistan it was something of a day off. they had a special holiday meal.

they did get turkey. they did have ham. they were playing volleyball. there's a poker tournament going on the other side of this base. obviously we're still in afghanistan. we're very close to the border with pakistan. so the troops have to remain on guard, on alert. there was a volleyball tournament earlier today and even as they were playing all the soldiers had their weapons lined up right beside them. tonight now that it's starting to get morning in the united states they will begin skipg with their families. the troops here say their morale is very high and having a little bit of a thanksgiving spirit even though we're on this remote outpost in afghanistan. >> richard engel there in afghanistan as that helicopter is about to take off. thank osu much. appreciate your time. of course your reporting. we have a lot coming up in this hour. next, we will get on the butterball talk line and find out what's best for your turkey.

for millions of americans. drivers in northeast are dealing with everything from high winds to snow near the great lakes as we hit the 7:30 a.m. dessert or door buster deals? more stores are opening their doors today on thanksgiving hoping to lure in shoppers before or after their holiday meal with discounts and deals. those retailers are going to have to work extra hard because in a new university connecticut poll nine out of ten respondents said they would not shop on thanksgiving. well with those one out of ten, nbc john yang who is live outside a k-mart in chicago doesn't look to be much happening at this moment though, john. >> reporter: richard, it was not a great surge when it opened about 25 minutes ago. only about 30 people in line. the first person in line only got in line about 1:00 this morning. waited about five hours. so not a big surge here. but all across the country, retailers are opening up before

the thanksgiving dinner, before the football games, trying to get a piece of that holiday shopping budget earlier and earlier. pre-dawn friday used to be the start of the holiday shopping season with the annual running of the bargain hunters. but attention shoppers, it's moved to thanksgiving thursday. >> we have a traditional turkey dinner at my parents every thanksgiving and then soon after dinner we're off to stores. >> reporter: this year it started earlier than ever. couldn't sleep? most walmarts are open 24 hours. early risers could start bargain hunting at k-mart at 6:00 a.m. or wait until after breakfast. most old navy stores opened at 9:00 a.m. want to finish dinner, toys "r" us opens at 5:00 p.m. best buy at 6:00 and stores like macy's, target and sears open their doors at 8:00. other retailers like nordstrom are making a point of not

opening today. new york area electronics chain pc richard and son has an ad about it. >> at pc richard and son we believe thanksgiving should be spent at home. >> reporter: that suit some shoppers just fine. >> i like the tradition of family for thanksgiving. >> reporter: rather than shopping? >> rather than shopping. >> feed me, stuff me like the turkey and sit me in a corner and leave me for the rest evening. i'm not going out. >> reporter: so, love it or hate it, there's some estimates that about 33 million americans will do some sort of shopping today. but more of them will be going online than coming to brick-and-mortar stores like this one. richard? >> as you've been there throughout the morning and looking at all the shoppers, there's also the workers that have to go in on there and help all of these great customers that want to buy things from places like k-mart. have you had a chance of any of those employees and their reaction of having to work on this holiday? >> reporter: there has been a little bit of a backlash.

there have been people, petition online against this. there have been -- there are protests planned at some wall matters. but stores are trying to ease the blow or soften the blow. k-mart has made as many volunteers as they can, asked people if they wanted to work today. and walmart is going even further. they are paying time and a half, offering their workers a hot turkey dinner during their shifts and giving them all 25% discounts on purchases. so try to soften that blow as much as they can. richard? >> john yang we'll get you a hot turkey dinner for working anthony day too. john yang for us in chicago. be sure to get some of those door buster dealings. it won't just be shoppers hitting all those stores as john was telling us. the group our walmart has announced 150 protests outside of walmart stores. that group is calling on the retail giant to improve labor standards such as providing

workers with more full time work and wages of at least $25,000 a year. joining me now is barbara gertz a walmart associate in denver who is taking part in the black friday protest. thanks for joining me. you heard john yang's report. an issue you're fully aware of. you're a full time employee and worked for walmart for what nearly five years and earned less than $25,000 you're telling us. why your supporting these black friday protests that we've been talking about at walmart? >> well, i support them because thanksgiving is a time to be spending with your family. and i feel that, you know, it's not just the walton family that should enjoy the holiday, it's all the associates too should be able to spend time with their families as well. and black friday should stay black friday. >> keep it all in that one day

is what you're saying. we reached out the walmart for a comment on this issue and as well as a guest that could speak with us regarding the black friday protests. we're awaiting a response. we also did have this to show our viewers. a recent press release from walmart that says black friday is our super bowl and we plan to win persistenting out there are six fewer shopping days this season compared to last year. now last year there were similar protests on black friday. what do you hope to change by participating in this? what sort of impact would you like to make? >> well, this year we are going to have a lot more, a great deal more people showing up for the protests because our communities are starting to realize this is not fair, and there are more associates standing up, and we hope that we will get walmart to change its practices, and to

respect its associates and their ability to have time with their families. and then also we're hoping through the protests that we can get them to rehire the fired workers and start paying their associates a living wage. at least $25,000 a year. >> barbara you heard what john was telling us, how walmart is kick off their back friday sales tonight at 6:00 p.m. also there's about 1 million employees that are working today at walmart. walmart is offering their associates who work thanksgiving special compensation. they will get extra pay that the company says is equal to an additional day's work. a 25% discount on purchases they make during a designated period in early december and a

thanksgiving dinner at walmart. >> a meal with associates doesn't replace time with your family. >> you decided i'm not going to work today. there are others who say i do want to work. you said i'm not is going to work today. are you working tomorrow. >> i work the overnight shift and yes i have to be in friday evening. but i was lucky enough to be one of the ones that was not scheduled for today. >> barbara, on your day off, thank you for stopping by to speak with us and you have a very good holiday in front of you. >> thank you for having me. >> you bet. turning now to your thanksgiving meal itself. if the uncooked turkey sitting in your refrigerator, a little bit intimidating at this moment, right? no need to fear. the fine folks at the butterball turkey talk line are here. they have been doing this for about 30 years. what's different about today for the folks on the other end of the line.

make a difference if you're a man or a woman you'll have a great time. we found other food experts but they happen to be men. we put them in with us. they blend in very nicely. we're having a great time. >> mary what kind of questions do the men ask versus the women. how do you distinguish those two is this >> so far we haven't seen much difference. so if you love to cook, they are into it as well as we are. a lot of -- they love to cook turkeys all kind of different ways and that's what we're finding. people like deep fry. they like to put it on the grill. they like to do some experiment or make it maybe a different marinade, something like that. so we're here at the talk line and maybe you can see behind us all the noise already today. a lot of people already today. >> since i got you on the line. i got a question. what is something i should do when i'm carving a turkey. what's the one key thing i should remember. >> make sure your knife is

sharp. >> okay. >> the other thing is let it sit out for 15 to 20 minutes before you start carving. then the slices will be very nice. >> you're also giving advice on wine. that's different that folks might not know about. what's a good wine to pair up with your turkey. >> that's amazing what -- what identify learned it's such a personal choice. if there's a wine that you particularly enjoy it's going to being a great with turkey. so we do have a list of suggestionses and you might hear the list and say oh, yeah i drink that wine all the time and that works out very well. >> keep the number of glasses low, please, ladies and gentlemen. you know, there's also something interesting as you know, today thanksgiving has the overlap with hanukkah. so i personally was thinking of making a turbriket and some latkas. >> i won't be eating at your house today. >> come on.

fighting for apartheid. >> how did the lead actor and actress talk about this. >> the director talked about going being south africa and immersing himself in nelson mandela's story. he met nelson mandela a year ago before his 94th birthday and showed him preliminary parts of the movie. he said is that me? he was so excited to see himself on the big screen and naomi harris screened this film last month in south africa and said mrs. mandela cried and said this is the first time i've seen myself and it's been done right. they are embracing this film. >> sounds great. let's talk about "best men holiday." >> this was released a couple of weeks ago. it's getting a lot of buzz. it overperformed when it first came out. made for 17 million. made 31 million and now has 50

million amassed so far. great film. all-star cast. back in theaters after 15 years. the director said he's working on a sequel. subject to distract us a little bit. perhaps even late friday even. >> the data and the experiences and the anecdotes will come out and robert will avoid. what's the calculus for republicans if the website does not work to the expectations which are not necessarily black and white or cut and dry. do they actively work with republicans and constituents to get the best deal or cross our fingers that they don't hit the sign up goals they put out for the end of march? >> i think republicans should do what they are doing and keep quiet and let the administration define themselves and let the website define themselves. the actions speak for themselves. we had tens of thousands if not hundreds of thens getting cancellations. hundreds of thousands are waiting for 20, 30, 45 minutes to get kicked out of the system. what republicans are doing is

saying you know what, let the administration define themselves on this issue. we have said all that we can say. we said a year and a half ago that they will have a lot of hiccups and that's what's happening now. i think the best thing to do is for republicans to keep quiet for what i just mentioned. they don't have a credible spokesperson right now. it seems like the most credible for this is president obama who he himself said there a lot of flaws and bumps here. let's continue to let this define itself. >> say expectations are not meant as many are saying at the moment. march should be the true test date and let this be what they

need to continue? whether it's increasing capacity. >> list out the accomplishment. particularly the way we operate, there is going to be a late in peoria who couldn't figure out the form or maybe she got a cancellation and folks will foist on that and place a spot line on that and that's going to be very, very kifl. and they hope that despite this there is improvement and they can move on to the national conversation on other topics.

harvesting for a while and they wanted to have a feast. our 90 men in return came back and sat down and had a feast for about days. they ate and convened about what was to happen. when frank gave a speech, it wasn't this was a day of thanksgiving, but reflected on the past as to what happened. the national day the mourning was given birth. folks gathered and talked about the history that took place to make sure that history doesn't happen.

but attention shoppers. it's moved to thanksgiving thursday. >> we had the traditional turkey dinner at my parents's and then soon after dinner we are off to the stores. >> this year it started earlier than ever. cooped sleep? most wal-marts are open 24 hours. early risers can start at k mart at 6:00 or wait until after breakfast. most old navy stores open at 9:00 a.m. want to finish dinner? toys 'r us opens at 5:00 p.m. and best buy at 6:00 and macy's, target and sears open at 8:00. nordstrom make a point of not opening today. pc richard and son has an ad about it. >> we believe thanksgiving should be spent at home. >> that suits some shoppers just fine. >> i like the tradition of family for thanksgiving. >> feed me and stuff me like the

turkey and sit me in the corner and leave me for the rest of the evening. i am not going out. >> love it or hate it, retailers estimate 33 million americans will do some sort of shopping this thanksgiving day. a bigger portion of it than last year will be online. a smaller portion than brick and mortar stores like this one. >> stay bundled up. i'm sure it's cold where you are. get yourself a big flat screen tv. thank you. from shopping for gifts to shopping for health coverage, this is a big weekend for healthcare.gov. saturday is the deadline for it to be working for most users. skeptics are pointing to the latest set back, a delay for the online sign up of small businesses. let's bring in the panel now. the staff writer for the wire for politico. let's start with the latest. small businesses being off line for the extra year. does this increase pressure for

other delays. >> i don't know if we could be any more pressure. the fact that they have this dead line that you mention side by far the only thing they are worried about. the republicans have been putting pressure on them for anything that happened. adding this to the pile doesn't make that much of a difference. assuming they can get through this weekend. >> the white house is using a lot of qualifiers about saturday's website deadline. will it be running better mostly functional. >> what is the actual bar for success as phillip was saying? expectations are not exactly on high at this point. what would you consider the bar for success here? >> it's weather users can sign up. that's what we are starting to see. the numbers are really low as far as enrollment goes. the next batch will come out in mid-december. those will be for november. we will see if the website works

for people to use. >> this famous saying goes, you never get the second chance to make a first impression. what on earth needs to happen? how are you actually going to get people at this point to convince themselves to sign up? to go out there and do it? >> i don't know if there is any way barring six months passing with no issues that they reverse the first perception. people still have not made a perception of the mail service. the perceptions are set in stone. over the weekends they have said they will be able to handle 50,000 people signing up at one time. on the first day they had 4.7 million the first day. 50,000 people concurrently is a good number and a lot of people can sign up, but it's probably the case that the president and his advisers have asked allies who have tried to hold off on this weekend according to a report just because they don't

want to overload the system. all they can do is hope it goes fairly smoothly and keeps getting better from here on out. >> i want to read a few things to both of you. a new gallup poll survey showed 19% said they are hurt by this. 9% benefit and 69% said they are not affected at all. when you asked the uninsured, the number saying they are unaffected rises to 70%. how big of a problem is that? the majority that it's supposed to help say it doesn't matter. >> it's still early, but that is significant. the numbers are the same as they were about a year ago from gallup which is interesting even with the health care.gov roll out and we are a lot further on in the process, americans are not saying that the law is helping them yet. that's something that we would hope to see or at least the white house would hope to see upcoming. right now the numbers are not boding well for the white house. >> what do i have to learn from

the states having success? steve was sitting in for rachel and mentioned california. how well they are doing with it. does that give anybody encouragement? as far as what the end game is actually. >> to this point, this has not changed. the fact that states like california is seeing a lot of success when it comes to the medicaid expansion. a lot of states that did managed to enroll a lot of people. the numbers have not changed over the course of the year because it hasn't kicked in yet and it bodes well. over the course of the next couple of months. i think this is what the president hopes for. people can start to get the sign ups. >> thank you so much and happy thanksgiving. >> happy thanksgiving. >> coming up, save the date.

today. how is the mood there today. >> the mood is quite good. they are having celebrations. to give you an estimate, we are talking about 70,000 pounds of turkey is being served today. 20,000 pies. around 45,000 u.s. troops here. obviously it is a privilege to have soldiers here today and their spirits are very high. >> on one of the last american outposts by the border with pakistan, thanksgiving starts with a turkey shot. >> it has to be at 5:30 in the morning. >> 3.2 miles up a mountain. they call it the to glory. hard enough and even harder carrying 80 pounds of mortars or if you are not trained for this. >> gives you a thirst.

your second set of family. brothers in arms. we come together as a family. we miss our families and wish we were sitting down stuffing our faces with them, but we are a family here and it's a privilege to have dinner with them tonight. >> i found out why he is in such great shape. he is preparing for his honeymoon. we will have a wedding reception when he gets back home. you said this is like another family. what bond do you guys have out here. it's not as dangerous as previous deployments. we are in a remote place. what's it like to be out here in harm's way? >> i feel safe. i know every man has my back as i would for them. i feel safe to be back. proficient at the job ready to do what we do. >> thank you very much. a lot of americans thank you. one other thing they would like to say.

>> richard angle. it does not get better than that. thank you so much. happy thanksgiving. richard spends with our troops in afghanistan, the question at home is how long the troops will be there. after the u.s. announced an agreement last week with people limited the presence in afghanistan beyond 2014. hamid karzai is not yet ready to sign that deal. the director of policy and thank you for being here with us and happy thanksgiving to you. >> happy to you too. >> despite the council of leaders voting to sign this agreement, president karzai is not ready to sign and saying he is waiting until next year and the u.s. wants it to happen this year. we don't have a lot of time involved. with so much support from afgha afghans, what is it about this deal that hamid karzai objects to? >> this is the longest war that the united states has been in in

our history. nearly 13 years. it's time for it to end. what needs to happen as well, a negotiated transition that assures that the country maintains stability. that's where the haggling is right now. president karzai is moving the goal post and seems to want us to engage with the taliban more directly and to commit to not enforcing grades in afghanistan as part of this agreement. yet that's not what was negotiated before in afghanistan. they didn't ask for the conditions. the haggling continues and does need to be resolved. if not, it could mean full withdrawal and that would not be serving our interest or afghan's interest. >> is this strictly a power play? >> is it does appear that way. this is somewhat the way karzai negotiated for nearly 13 years. i was at the state department in the early days of the war in

afghanistan when he was moved into power. he has been there for more time than any american president would be in office. he seems to feel that he can play these games back and forth to further advantage. there is a time limit. >> i have to say i'm surprised by that. i feel like this guy has been pushing the envelope with a very powerful nation and a benefactor for far too long. what is it about washington that is saying you know what, we are leaving. >> that is on the table. that's becoming clear. they are putting that out and saying look, if we don't have an agreement, we will withdraw. we did that in the case of iraq. it was a good decision in the case of iraq. in afghanistan, there is desire for americans in the international community to be there at some level from the afghan people. this could be very dangerous territory for afghanistan.

i think that pressure is something that the united states is counting on. that changes karzai's mind as he heads out of office. >> let's switch gears and talk about the nuclear deal. the big sticking point was enriching uranium. the u.s. and other western countries say no, you cannot. iran said we are able to do that on a limited basis. you can just break that down for us? >> absolutely. the iranian nuclear program has been enriching uranium for a number of years and currently has nearly 20,000 centrifuges. this agreement by the way, the deal is sinking in and the american public is supporting it at a 2-1 clip. this deal freezes the iranian nuclear programs and capability and takes the most dangerous material, what is known as 20% enriched uranium off the table

that will be liquidated through the international atomic energy on a daily basis. it freezes in place what they are doing and allows us to have access into the nuclear infrastructure. they can negotiate a full arrangement. >> know from a hard line group for israel said this. i'm quoting. my honest feeling is this deal is not going to last six months. there is too much history of the iranians entering into a deal and then compliance not happening. we are hearing that they allow inspectors and they are allowing inspectors in on december 8th. what does it say to you. we are in a new phase in iranian and international communities. the president of the united states spoke with iran's president at the end of september. we have been engaged in more diplomacy than the previous three decades.

this is real and serious. this was not an easy agreement to get. there was an agreement that all permanent members of the council signed on to. with germany and iran. it is four pages in black and white. the international atomic agency agreement has as well. they were heading in and we need to look at this and test it. it's clear that it will be tough. that doesn't mean it will fall apart. now all sides know what they have to do in this period while they negotiate a deal to prevent a bond. >> joel ruben, thank you and happy thanksgiving. >> same to you. >> take care. >> which balloons are stealing the show? we will get a live report from the parade route coming up. ♪ ♪

would that derail her from running at this point. >> look, that poll is absolutely worthless. it's too far away to make a difference. so many things can happen. she would be a formidable candidate. i think that's a big if. no question about it and the people have a high opinion of her and she would be a strong candidate. it's way too early. >> a question for both of you. we will start with you. . i feel like this is like christmas in august. it starts earlier and earlier and earlier. every election it's expensive and exhausting. is it detrimental to the process? >> some will argue absolutely. you see so much money being spent and to gain influence and it happens in incremental ways whether it's early primaries or getting consultants or the ugliness.

how it leads to such gridlock in washington. if you are always campaigning and running for election whether it's president or senate or congress, you are running that war and not getting anything done. that's the biggest frustration people see and the public will have. things are not getting done. they always see a race ahead of them. that's difficult. >> governor, what do you think? >> i think susan is right. i love to see a law or it wouldn't be constitutional. nobody could do anything for a presidential campaign until two years before it. you hear none of this and no one can do anything until january of 15. that would give a full year before iowa. that's enough. >> that are used to be the case until two or three cycles ago. >> absolutely. >> what would fix things? >> when i was dnc chair, i

endorsed the secretary of state's plan. five primaries a month apart. it rotates every election cycle. the first becomes the fifth and the fifth becomes first, etc. that would be perfect. they would be done geographically so they could stay in area and campaign. they start the first in february. february, march, april, may, and june we have our nominee. >> another poll said they look at florida in 2016. it finds that hillary clinton and jeb bush both win their primaries. the former governor has a 4% lead over his pro same-sex marriage email this week. quoting liz cheney saying freedom means freedom for everyone. my apologies. will jeb bush run -- let me back up. it's a very big -- both show them winning the primaries.

do you think he will matchup against hillary clinton? do you think he is in it? >> i don't, but i agree with governor rendell. it is so early to tell, but more likely that hillary will be running than jeb bush. we are talking about the family dynasties. it's difficult for a bush to run even eight years later for president of the united states. i think his biggest competition will be chris christie, a very successful governor. if you are going with governors or former governors, chris christie will probably raise the money that former governor bush will be helping to raise. >> what is the conversation around the cheney table? >> i don't know, but i hope there is a food tester for it. >> governor, what do you think? >> let me say about jeb bush. it's a shame.

hillary clinton and jeb bush. it would be a good choice. >> what i'm interested in is george p. i know he is running for texas. comptroller? >> it's interesting. we have president carter's grandson running for congress. a lot of dynasty building. people are more comfortable or frustrated with the leadership they are seeing in washington. there is something that cuts both ways and maybe having people who are used to getting something done. >> it's fascinating to watch. thank you both. >> don't forget chelsea. >> that's true. she may jump in. you never know. not sure what you top the do for black friday? the best deals on the hottest new gadgets and later, a pizza hut owner decided to close for

might be anthony weiner. >> you know, he is. it was actually a relatively quiet year in political scandals as years go, but anthony weiner was certainly a standout. his comeback bid for new york mayor was supposed to be, you know, a new moment for him, a chance for him to rebrand himself and it pretty much fell apart. >> in a way it was kind of his race to lose, wasn't it? >> it certainly was. he had the name i.d. he had a lot of other things going for him but really couldn't get past previous scandals and then he didn't handle it all that well when the scandals were brought up in his mayoral race, he was yelling at voters on campaign stops and so really just kind of self-destructed. >> so, phillip, republican congressman steve king of iowa. >> yeah, i mean, the difference between king and weiner is weiner wasn't holding office. steve king actually a sitting congress member who decided to say for every valedictorian granted amnesty under the immigration law there were hundreds who were carrying drugs

acro across the border and had calves the side of cantaloupes. >> which means what, you tell me? >> it was a weird thing to say and a weird thing to defend. he gave a very strange defense to it. >> okay. lee, "snl" is having a field day with mayor rob ford of toronto. >> yeah. if you're in canada and you're making americans pay attention to your local politics, you're doing something either very right or very wrong. and rob ford has certainly been a character in politics recently. just getting a lot of attention and not in a good way. denying a lot of charges. of usage of drugs and potentially involvement with prostitutes and just really he's gotten a lot of attention and not in a good way. >> phillip, this is a hard one to do in about 30 seconds or less, but ken cuccinelli in virginia, it was a very interesting race to watch. >> it ended up being very close in part because his opponent was not a particularly strong candidate either. but cuccinelli played on a lot

"t" minus two days we are live in washington as the white house works to meet its deadline for healthcare.gov. also live updates on your holiday weather including those high winds for new york city's thanksgiving day parade, if those balloons are going. plus, it wouldn't be turkey day without football and lots of it. new attitudes on the all-american sport. we'll share that with you. right now first off, the

87th annual macy's thanksgiving day parade is under way in new york city. this morning officials cleared the jeent giant balloons for fl. 50 million will watch on tv and 3 million more are watching from along the parade route. holiday shopping is under way, too, already turning today into black thursday. kmart was the first big box store to open. several other chains will open this evening and some will be open throughout the night. but laws in rhode island and maine and massachusetts prohibit stores from opening today. it's illegal there and this thanksgiving is special as well for the jewish religion. thanksgiving overlaps with hanukkah this year. that won't happen again if you're pulling out your calendar for 70,000. all right, now to weather. 43 million american travelers grateful to avoid the nightmare forecast many had anticipated, but driving conditions were not perfect. one system dumped more than 9 inches of snow in parts of

pennsylvania. boy, that made it tough to make up the hills. look at that, a separate system dropping several inches of rain from carolinas to maine causing flash flooding and icy roadways. nbc meteorologist bill karins joins us now. things hopefully getting a little bit nicer and we'll not have a difficult road trip to our grandmother's house. >> a lot better than yesterday. >> oh, man. >> happy thanksgiving to you, richard. snoopy flew by our window. >> i saw you checking it out. how did snoopy look? >> they are holding the balloons a little bit lower this year because of the winds but they're still flying. >> you predicted that. >> very enjoyable. yesterday the rain was very impressive, the only problem we had out there was it froze overnight so there are some ilessy spots where it rained heavy last night where there are puddles. otherwise a coating of snow on the ground from kalamazoo and grand rammeds and still some snow showers coming down.

be careful out there. the big story is the cold air. i mean, it's hard to find a spot on this map that's not chilly, even l.a. and phoenix are at 51 windchill value right now and the coldest windchills are in the northern plains and they're not happy in new orleans with a windchill of 33. not much better in orlando either. everyone is pretty much in the same boat here. the cold air has followed our big winter storm. at least the sun will be out just about everywhere. if you're doing early travel to get to grandma's house or your friends or families, no problems out there with the exception of the great lakes spots i just mentioned and the people like richard lui who will be out later tonight waiting on the sidewalk with their sleeping bag and hand warmers waiting for the stores to open, it will be a cold night if you are heading out for late night shopping and that will continue the trend for tomorrow. >> we'll take it, helmet, pads, that's what i always use. you got to do it. >> you'll be pushing the people

out of the way. you're one of those. >> you got to be in front, man, right? you get the tvs for $22 or whatever it is nowadays. >> put it on your twitter feed. >> that the first float of the parade? >> turkey and the first balloon is snoopy. >> thank you so much, bill karins all the touch on weather as well as the parade today. thanksgiving at the white house means family and a big feast. while the president has pardoned the national thanksgiving turkey, with just two days to the administration self-set deadline to get healthcare.gov and the exchange and all the computers behind it working for the vast majority of users, nbc's kristen welker joins us now from the white house and, you know, there's three developments that came out just looking through the headline when i got up this morning, kristen. there is the issue of the servers and who will be handles that and we've got other delays you'll be telling us about. >> reporter: that's right. it seems like the announcements keep on coming, richard, not

making anything look any better for the obama administration certainly. they say tech experts working throughout the holiday weekend to try to get the website working smoothly for the vast majority of americans, but this comes as wednesday announcement from this administration that they will delay the ability for small businesses to logon and enroll in the website through healthcare.gov for another year. what does this mean practically speaking? not a whole lot. small businesses are going to have to keep on doing what they've always done which is to enroll in health care through agents and through brokers. but certainly the optics of this aren't great and you do have some small business representatives expressing concern saying that this is going to make a complicated process all that more confusing. you also have republicans who have pounced on this, seized on this opportunity to try to gain more political traction. they've already gained quite a bit from the rocky rollout of healthcare.gov. you have house speaker john boehner saying that this is just another indication that the

health care law is not working saying that the president bit off more than he can chew when it comes to obama care. so, that where things stand. but, again, the obama administration insisting that they will be ready for this saturday deadline. they say the website will be able to support as many as 50,000 users by then. by the way, we're also learning, richard, that verizon will be replaced by another carrier, hewlett-packard as the provider. they say that was in the works since last spring. richard? >> only 24 hours, fast and furious there as they look at what is happening with the obama care exchange. kristen welker, happy thanksgiving, my friend, i'll talk with you later. the white house saying its tech team working through the holiday to get that website running well for the vast majority of users, but how good is good enough for healthcare.gov? want to bring in the panel now. politico with us from washington and in chicago msnbc contributor jim warren. good to see you both again. the administration, you heard

the developments coming from the white house. kristen welker, those three changes, if you will, that were announced in the last 24 hours. the optics, talk about that. >> these are certainly new optics, but polling numbers have borne out that this health care law has been a drag on the president's approval numbers. obviously these signature accomplishment of the president, president obama, a big campaign theme. he talked about. so these incremental fixes, these delays, have certainly been a problem for the white house. they're seeking to get a handle on and they haven't been able to do it quite yet. we'll be tracking it very closely. >> do you think this will be the end of it on saturday or is this the second or third chapter of what might be ten chapters long? >> from where i think this is the second or third chachter. obviously there have been so many delays. house republicans have launched a flurry of inquiries into the health care law, they won't let it go. this will be the signature issue of the 2014 campaign. >> the president's polling taking a hit here. his approval rating either

hitting or tieing all-time lows in recent polls. a couple there, cnn, 41%, quinnipiac 39%. how much room is there for him to rebound here and what might cause that to happen? >> i think there's a lot. it would be crazy a year out from an election to suggest that, you know, this would have to be the status quo or that he's on an inevitable decline. particularly in the 24/7 news cycle can change very rapidly, but even though the good news would be that his poll ratings look a lot better than those than congress, when you look closely there are real questions about honesty and trustworthiness and real questions about the support of moderates and independents. but that said having just listened to you and your colleague bill, i can't help but analogize to snoopy and the other balloons being buffetted above central park by the winds and trying to come down lower in the same way that the health care is being buffeted, they'll

have to lower expectations and if that doesn't work. i think politically what might be interesting on a legislative front is whether folks in congress, particularly nervous democrats who, you know, are thinking about whether they're going to keep their jobs next november go into action, programs extend the enrollment deadlines maybe even take some action about the penalties, remember, financial penalties, that you suffer if you do not enroll. >> if you want to use the same analo analogy, jim's very good at this, we've got to get him in studio for this. talk about the republicans, they're getting a boost and floating higher because of the winds that jim is talking about. new polls showing gop up two points and democrats were up eight points just a month ago. how worried are democrats about losing the edge they had gained after the government shutdown or is that just old news and we're really looking forward to the 114th? >> the congressional democrats i speak to are absolutely concerned about this. they are as frustrated as the president, as the administration is that the roll yount of this

health care law has been so blighted. if uf listen to them back in their home districts now at town halls they're talking about that frustration, that anger, how they want this to work right for their constituents. i do think there's a very real realization for democrats that this is an issue that could cost them largely politically and it's just a question of how big that gap is. is that two-point dropped that you talked about as far as it goes or does the ship get righted and there is a correction very soon. >> jim, the correction, might it be the case that's being taken by the supreme court and contraception? >> you know, richard, i really don't think -- i think that's the sort of story that might not necessarily have the legs. although obviously if you're a congressional candidate next year and there's an adverse ruling you'll be bringing it up, but all politics being local, the key to the democrats will they have real good candidates running against incumbent republicans so they can possibly make inroads in the house and lest us forget the senate. that's the republicans big year

welcome back to our special coverage on black thursday formerly known as thanksgiving. many of the biggest retailers already been open for several hours if you can believe that this morning as the battle for door buster sales starts earlier and earlier. but will people really skip that

good meal, turkey, stuffing, all that stuff for holiday deals? joining us right now from a kmart in chicago is nbc's john yang, and, you know, one of the questions here, john, was whether folks would get confused because they're so used to hearing black friday and so used to understanding thursday is thanksgiving, will this cause more questions than actually helping the bottom line that retailers are looking at? >> reporter: well, i tell you, richard, a lot of the analysts that we talked to said it's likely to spread the business out over these next few days rather than generate new business. here in the kmart in chicago when they opened the doors at 6:00 a.m., there were only 30 people in line but they all knew what they wanted. the door buster tablets that were selling for $39.95 sold out in about 45 minutes according to the manager. also popular today, flat screen tvs. but it's still -- this is the first year that kmart is going to stay open, opened at 6:00 a.m. this morning, they'll stay

are still fired, you are still let go. >> no, i wasn't reinstated. my boss called me late last night and i haven't had a chance to get back to him. obviously that's kind of something to think about. that's not a decision one would make right away. >> when you heard -- you were basically saying, hey, look, this is thanksgiving, i don't want to open up the store, and you say that you were told, well, hand in your resignation and continue for me. >> yeah. that's correct. i was just told that i needed to write a letter of resignation and i just kind of refused and, you know, being fired and resigning are two very different things and shortly after that i was fired. >> what was your reasoning for not wanting to work and open up your store on thanksgiving? >> it wasn't necessarily that i would have to work. i might not even had to work that day. i just didn't want anybody else to have to work on thanksgiving in my store and i just think it's a big family holiday and those people who already don't make much money just deserve to have a day off with their families.

>> you know, tony, i want to read a statement that we got from pizza hut that they issued this morning. they say in part, quote, we fully respect an employee's right to not work on a holiday which is why the vast majority of pizza huts in america are closed on thanksgiving. as a result, we strongly recommend that the local franchisee reinstate the store manager and they have agreed. okay, so that was similar to what you were saying was posted on facebook. what were you hearing from the corporate office throughout this entire process? >> you know, that's pretty much what i heard. i actually didn't hear anything from the corporate office or from my franchise until late last night. no one tried to contact me any time in the last two weeks until it was on national news. >> all right. tony rohr, thank you so much for your time today. >> thank you. from restaurants now we move you to retailers. many of the people working today are minimum wage employees, income inequality is an issue that has been gaining traction lately. in this week there were some big victories for those fighting for a higher minimum wage. we got maryland montgomery's and

prince georges counties, both voting to raleise their minimum wage by 2015. and sea-tac in washington around the airport that approved a $15 minimum for some of the workers, the nation's highest. joining me is the president of river research and a columnist for reuters and "the atlantic." always great to see you here. when you look at raising of the minimum wage, you know, getting beyond all the politics, does it work? >> yeah, i mean, this is the question. it is certainly true that it works in that it brings people up to above poverty level, right? so the minimum wage of $7.25 in the country given a 30-hour workweek doesn't even bring you to the poverty level if you are a family of two. bringing it to $15 brings you above it although certainly you are not hanging out thinking whoo-hoo. the issue is if you don't raise the minimum wage and you do what

we currently do now, you end up spending a lot of time with government transfer payments because as a society even the most conservative amongst us seem to be unwilling in a very good way to allow people to live in complete poverty and not be able to meet either food or shelter needs, right? we don't allow for that. >> is it overall good for the economy in the entire pie? >> you know, if the minimum wage goes up? >> yes, if it goes up. >> if the minimum wage goes up, it is good in that it helps people to meet their basically requirements and potentially reduces the amount of government assistance that you need to help them bring up to their needs. the issue is the only societies where you have decent paying at the bottom where you have less payment at the top and more expensive goods meaning germany or japan or places where this is not as much of an issue. and americans seem to be willing to have certain trade-offs, but if you said to them, look, the goods at walmart will be more expensive because we're paying people more money, that's not a trade off that a lot of

americans seem to support and it's the only trade-off that we know of. >> i want to get your thoughts on this, there's a column this weekend, and i have a little bit of it here, and he said the minimum wage increases actually hurt those they're supposed to help because of various reasons. saying 80%, for instance, of restaurant workers that earn the federal minimum wage works part time and, therefore, it hurts the very group it's aimed to help. >> his claim would be if you raise minimum wage restaurants wouldn't be able to hire as many. >> correct. >> at a certain point the money does have to come from somewhere and the trade-off would have to be either a higher tax burden on the very wealthy, ie, you are essentially transferring it, or you raise the cost of goods and the restaurant charges $1 more a meal or walmart charges $20 for the flat screen and the money does have to come from somewhere. we should all say it should come from somewhere, we shouldn't be in a system where you have an abject labor force that's earning less than they need to meet basic needs. >> the what about the earned

the supreme court this week agreed to take up another aspect of the affordable care act this one among the most controversial, whether a company can refuse to provide contraceptive care to female employees on the basis of religious freedom. the court has ruled in the past that when it comes to political

speech corporations are, in fact, people. but what about when it comes to freedom of religion? for more i'm pleased to be joined by our political analysts. and one of the challenges here to this affordable care act is a provision that comes from a company called the hobby lobby. which has 13,000 full-time employees and the company founder david greene saying, quote, we believe wholeheartedly that it is by god's grace and provision that hobby lobby has been successful, therefore, we seek to honor him in all that we do. susan? set it up there. is a company, is an organization, can they say this is religious freedom, we would like to express that? >> well, i suppose i understand the point of view, but then it goes to which religion are you going to take your values from? is it from the christian faith? is it scientology? i mean, there's a lot of things that would be affected in this

law. it's not just about contraception, so i think it's going to be a very slippery slope for the courts to take and, more importantly, i'm concerned that they're going to use this to manipulate the affordable care act one way or the other and it really shouldn't be. women's reproductive rights, women's contraception, this is not something that should be discussed. it's not something that needs to be discussed over an interview, a job interview, oh, will you require contraception? that's just not going to fly. >> right. >> justice antonin scalia wrote an opinion back in 1990 a case about two native american employees fired for smoking pei peyote. we've never held that an individual's religious belief excuses him from compliance of an otherwise valid law. this parallel here. does that give you the hope that he may rule against this? >> no. because we're talking about antonin scalia and the key vote here is anthony kennedy and we owtually really don't know h

he will rule on this. he's actually very conservative on reproductive rights. i think susan is right about this doesn't need to be a question on a job interview, are you on birth control, that's not something that women should have to discuss with their bosses and even men, is your wife on birth control. i mean, all of this leads to a very slippery slope in terms of privacy rights. >> for republicans here, susan, this is not the conversation they necessarily want to have. it was brought to a very difficult place, according to the polls, for republicans, six, seven out of ten saying they got it wrong because they were talking about religious freedom instead of women's rights to health care. >> depending on how this goes, it's going to be very problematic for republicans especially looking towards 2016. women do not want to be told by their government what to this do with their bodies and especially when it comes to their choices when it comes to birth control. this will be a losing proposition for them. and republicans are going to

have to be very careful. yes, there are some conservatives out there and they'll be fighting it all the way on the right in some congressional seats but that shouldn't take away the main point if the republicans want to win back the white house, they'll have to get a much more substantial part of the women's vote. >> what's your thoughts on saying the supreme court will say they'll rule on the case, they'll entertain it? what does it mean for democrats? >> i think for democrats it leads us to a wide space where we have the opportunity to fight the war on women all over again. not only in 2016 but also in 2014 because i think the conversation we're having about abortion, that we always have about abortion is one thing. that is not what the issue is in this particular case, people opposed to contraception is their argument. but plan "b," the morning-after pill, iuds they are not abortion inducing and that's their argument. there no validity there and i think for democrats we know that women don't want their birth control taken away.

msnbc. a great grandmother in active duty in afghanistan right now. we understand you are driving trucks for convoy missions at the moment. but, tell us, what's this holiday like for you? >> yes, i am. it's been pretty great today. i'm very blessed today. i enjoyed some great people. met some nice interesting people here today and everything. had a great lunch. it was really great. >> now, just for our viewers, we do have a little bit of a delay because we are talking to you, again, in afghanistan. so, staff sergeant, if we could, we often hear that your fellow soldiers become your family. you are probably the only great grandmother at least on that base, but tell us what that's like, how you've developed a family there with fellow troops. >> well, actually, my platoon call me the mom of the platoon

and most of my soldiers call me mom, they'll say, mom, i need to talk to you, mom, can you help me with this. and i'll say, okay, let's go sit down and talk about it. but other than that we work together as a team right now we're away from our families and a lot of people are missing their family at home. i'm actually away from my unit today. i'm in bagram and i had to meet other peoples and make them my extended family today. so, it has been fun. it has been great. and i feel like i'm very thankful and blessed today. i'm enjoying myself here. >> you certainly are a blessing and great to see your approach and your attitude about this. if your family's watching here in the united states, what message might you have for them? >> happy thanksgiving. hope you had a blessed day today. i miss you. love you. and i will see you next year. >> that's great. staff sergeant sheila lucius, i'll call you mom today, too,

are watching the macy's thanksgiving parade. under way in new york city. snoopy passing by 30 rock here where we're at about 30 minutes ago. officials clearing the 16 giant balloons for flight between the city's skyscrapers. 40 smaller balloons, 900 clowns, 900 of those, along with numerous floats and volunteers round out that event. take a look at this brooklyn nets coach jason kidd denies intentionally spilling his soda to force a time-out. nets player taylor appears to throw an inadvertent shoulder into kidd during the game in the final seconds and the spill did cause a brief delay while the crews cleaned it up. the nets lost to the lakers 99-94. what do you think? it is a big part of the thanksgiving tradition, football, lots of it is, includiinclude including steelers/ravens game on nbc. a lot of the talk is about what's going on off the field. for more on that i'm joined by chris strauss nfl reporter for "usa today." you've had a lot to talk about

this past season off the field. we cannot help but talk about the dolphins and incognito. from what we've been talking about, from what we've been reading, are we getting all the right data in terms of what's happening in that controversy? >> i think right now everything's been somewhat one-sided. you know, jonathan martin left the team. he claimed he was bullied, you know, he -- his lawyer released a tech -- you know, a voice mail transcript that did not actually have the context of the voice mail. you know, i don't know that we're really aware of everything that's happened and right now there's an investigator, ted wells, who has been speaking to dolphins players, executives, who is trying to get to the bottom of it. but what we do know right now incognito has served a four-game suspension. martin left the treatment and he's supposedly getting treatment in california. i don't know that we expect him back. >> you've seen plenty of seasons and when things like this come up, there could be long-term effects, there could be nothing. right now today on thanksgiving, we have some breathing space, do you expect this to affect rules

going forward or is that kind of going by the wayside? >> identify thi think we'll hav and see what the independent investigator comes up. was it an isolated incidence or is it an institutional issue. i was in the giants locker room a couple weeks ago talking to those guys and i know a lot of our other reporters have talked to a bunch of people on other teams and though guys don't seem to think it's an issue. i spoke to troy polamalu from the steelers who said i've never seen anything like that here. i think we'll have to wait and see what the investigator comes up with, is it one bad apple and did it get out of hand? it's possible. identify think it's a leadership culture. we'll see. >> the other one that you've been writing about and we've been discussing is concussions. >> yes. >> and the issue of damage to the brain. >> yes. you know, and i -- it's funny, not that the bullying thing is at all a good thing for the nfl, but in some ways it's almost been a distraction from the

continued concussion epidemic. and the nfl's doing what they can to, you know, address the issue. but it's certainly out there. it somewhat changes the ways that fans are watching the game a little bit in that, you know, before you would get really excited about a hard hit. and now, i mean, there was one guy from the raiders last week took a shot. i think everyone just sort of cringed because, you know, you've seen the documentaries now and you've talked to some of the players who are suffering some of the after-effects and it's a little bit -- >> brett favre who spoke out. >> brett favre spoke out. and so that's -- it's interesting to see how that may affect rule changes. i don't know. >> what's your thought here? because as you watch this, chris, is it going to come down to the way fans like us are reacting to it? or is it going to come down to what some court, some judge, some arbitration group comes up with in terms of a decision? >> i think where there will finally be a bit of a sea change is if parents stop allowing their kids to play. >> early on. >> i think it may be more on the youth football lines.

because right now the current players for the most part say do you know what, we're aware of the risks. you know, the explayers who said, you know, the nfl did not give us all the data or, you know, we were -- you know, we signed up for knee injuries or hip injuries, but we didn't sign up for brain injuries. we didn't know this was a risk. anyone who enters this game now whether it's high school, college, pro level -- >> middle school. >> right. they're aware that this is a potential -- a potential hazard. and richard sherman from the seahawks actually wrote first person op-ed for "sports illustrated's" monday morning quarterback site, saying do you know what, if you're worried about head injuries, don't watch the game. i know the risks. this is a guy that went to stanford, he's a pretty smart guy, and he said do you know what, i know what i'm doing. and i think a lot of players feel that way. and so it's -- it will be interesting to see what happens because you do, you hear a lot of parents who are saying, do you know what, due to the risks, we'll have our kids play soccer, something else. >> baseball, basketball, where

love with his computer operating system. it's voiced by scarlett johansson and it's made by the guy spike jones who made "being john mall co-vmallkovich." it sounds weird but it's a very affecting touching movie that's gotten -- >> not "mandela" that's not on your lists here? >> "mandela" is a very traditional bio-pic. very old fashioned. it's inspirational but it's not really connecting with that well with voters right now. >> let's talk about the stars and who might win best actor. >> the acting race is really crowded this year. you have a couple of 77-year-old actors, robert redford in "all is lost," bruce dern in "alaska, and then you have them competing with matthew mcconaughey who, you know, dropped all the weight

now in just hours we'll learn of a rare deep space comet will survive an encounter a close one with the sun. the icy comet named ison is hurtling towards the sun from far past pluto. and joining me now is michelle

taller from nasa. so, michelle, an exciting event that might be happening here. 150,000 miles an hour identify understand ison will be going, the question is will it break up when it gets close to the sun? >> yes, actually when ison swings around the sun it's going to be even going faster than that. it will get upwards of 800,000 miles an hour which is absolutely incredible to me. >> wow. >> the comet has been falling in towards the sun from the outer solar system. it fell past mercury and we took a nice image with the messenger spacecraft and it whips around the sun and what astronomers are waiting to see if it survives the passage and if it does it might be a very nice show in december. >> what are the odds? what are you taking? >> well, you know, the spacecraft sees a lot of the sun-grazing comets and we have a fleet of solar observerer tos that look for these things and we've seen comets survive this passage before.

for example, comet lovejoy a couple years ago made a very close passage around the sun. it survived and this particular comet is actually quite a bit larger than comet lovejoy was. the nucleus, the chunk of ice that the comet is made of is about a mile across. >> a mile across. >> i'm cautiously optimistic. yeah, we don't know for sure. you know, interesting enough if it breaks up into many pieces in some ways that's even better for nasa because we'll be able to see the interior of the comet and that's what we're so interested in. because this comet is a pristine chunk of our solar system from 4 1/2 billion years ago. >> wow. >> so, inside are clues as to what happened in the very formation of our planets. >> talk about rings in a tree. so, if 800,000 miles and makes a giant u-turn around the sun. it will swing back out, outside of the inner solar system. will it get close to the earth? will it have any effect on the earth? >> no. actually, this comet is not going to be coming anywhere near the earth. the closest approach it gets to us is about 40 million miles

away. and even if it breaks up into many different chunks, all of the chunks will stay on roughly the same orbit, so it might be a very nice show, but that's it. this is nothing to worry about. and then it goes out into the outer solar system and as far as we know it will never come back. if it does, it will be in many millions of years. this is a onetime shot for comet ison. >> so, i have some time. i want to get out there during the holiday week, i want to see ison, how do i do it? >> well, so starting in early december, and once again this is assuming it survives its passage around the sun, it will be up very close to dawn, so go out before dawn and fairly near the sun in the sky, you'll see comet ison. as december progresses, it will get farther and farther away from the sun and that's good for us because that means it will be up at night. and by the time you get to late december it should be roughly where the big dipper is in the sky, so assuming it survives, you might be in for a very nice show come late december.

look for it up by the big dipper. >> we'll not be able to see it until then, though, there are reports it's 25 times write brighter now. is there a reason it's getting brighter as it gets closer to the sun? >> definitely. one of the things that's so fascinating about comets as they fall into toward the sun, the sun heats them up and all of these gases begin to boil off and they stream behind a comet in this wonderful long tail. >> uh-huh. >> and the tail of comet ison is currently about 5 million miles across. so, it's a wonderful chance to see what's inside the comet, what the chemistry is. it's also a neat probe of regions around the sun. when comets go very close to the sun, they interact with the sun's magnetic field, with the wind of particles that comes off the sun, so in some ways we're doing an experiment. >> right. >> we're throwing a big chunk of ice toward the sun and probing what the conditions are like right around there, too, it's a scientific gift, it's just a wonderful thing that's happened. >> this scientific gift has big numbers we're talking about 11,000 degrees on the sun on top of that. michelle, thank you so much, with us from nasa. amazing stuff behind you. if we had more time, i'd ask you
